This was useful for the first day or so. After you install a few apps, it takes forever to spin through the 'recents' to get to the desired app. You can't install a different launcher, so you have to deal with it...
Installing Apps from non-Amazon sources:
The KFHD has this setting, but blocks the Quick Download pages from the 'other' sources - so in effect you can't install lets say the Opera Browser.
Your own PDFs are fairly useless:
No Bookmarks. Is it difficult to be able to bookmark a page in a pdf? (apparently so) Your only solution is to either send your files to Amazon for conversion or get a conversion program for yourself.
Cloud Storage:
Ever tried sending 2gb of files to the cloud (and then downloading those files over WI-FI to your device?). You'll give up fairly quickly (and I have 5 Mbps upload speeds). Cloud is a good concept, but Amazon needs something similar to the iTunes software to manage transfers of large files and documents.
Flash support:
None. Flash rendering apps are not allowed.
Parental Control:
All or nothing. You can't lets say temporarily unlock the web browser for your kid and let everything else locked. No Siree Bob! once you enter your password, ALL controls are turned off and you have to go back into parental controls to turn them back on.
Useless Camera
OK, Useful if you use Skype, but for the rest of us, we just paid for a camera that cannot be used for anything else. (shocking waste of hardware IMO).
Note that I didn't even complain about the lack of an SD card slot, or that the wall charger has to be purchased separately, or the Ads, or that the Kindle needed a software upgrade within hours of its release due to the virtual keyboard not being able to enter form fields on web pages (e.g. google search bar or yahoo login fields)
All I can say is that Amazon is VERY lucky that an iPad mini was not released last week by Apple. For a device that doesn't even have a decent web browser, the Kindle fire HD is EXPENSIVE at $199.
(BTW, Amazon is sending me a replacement Kindle due to some lockups on mine, but I haven't docked them for that issue)
